Ten of the greatest inventions of all time

When I started this blog a few years ago, I had intentions to write more often, but life happens and I am yet to write up to 10 articles in about 6 years. The good thing is that I am already writing my third article this year, beating my annual personal record 😊.

There is so much turmoil around the world today, and we see the negatives amplified a lot more than the positives. I personally believe that we live in a beautiful world, that could have been a lot worse without the great inventions of those that came before us. We have been able to solve so many problems faced in history and can live a better quality of life than those before us, albeit amid so much poverty across the world.

So I thought I'd do a top ten list of the greatest inventions of all time that have truly impacted the world and made it a much better place to live. I know this list won't be all-encompassing, so pardon me for missing out on your favorite invention or ranking them otherwise.

10. Steel - Have you ever thought about how life would be if we did not have a vertical world? All the early predictions about the world running out of space due to a growing population were killed by this invention and steel has been the backbone of modern cities since then.

9. The clock - This underrated invention helps us track our days and keep track of time. There is so much that we cannot do without it.

8. The Camera - Maybe I am just vain but the camera makes my list. I am not just looking at the camera as a stand-alone invention but the invention responsible for video and the entire motion picture industry. Imagine if we caught some of the most iconic moments in history on camera. Moses coming down the mountain with the ten commandments, the birth and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, or the pyramids of Giza being built. Iconic.

7. Cars - Horses and carriage were really cool, but what about cars? I was born in the '80s and I cannot imagine a world without cars. Cars are the hallmark of modern living and they just keep getting better. It is no surprise that cars are the most traded man-made product in the world by value.

6. The telephone -  Communication has never been the same. Mobile phones even made a bigger impact, connecting the whole world at the click of a button. The telephone also laid the platform for future technology that would further integrate the world.

5. Television - The television is a cocktail of inventions. We already had the camera, then probably the radio, the television helped receive pictures and voices transmitted into homes. This first TV was over 100 years ago and it definitely isn't going anywhere. It is hard to see a household without one and it completely revolutionalized culture, learning, entertainment, and life itself.

4. The Computer - Initially invented to make calculations faster and later metamorphosed into the backbone of modern productivity. The computer is one of the most influential inventions ever created. Before computers got into homes, it made manufacturing simpler and faster and literally helped scale the world's productivity to levels humans could not.

3. The Internet - The early days of the internet was about connecting computers across the world but the impact has exploded since mobile phones literally became computers. The internet has picked literally all the greatest inventions in a century and connected it all together. From computers to cars, phones, televisions, and airplanes. The world is more connected than it has ever been. I can now watch live football matches in the skies while video-calling a friend in the most remote village in Africa.

2. The Airplane - This for me is still the most ridiculous invention of all time. We can fly! Humans built something bigger than a house and can fly in it across the world. The airplane is the pinnacle of human excellence. It basically means we can do anything. Just outrageous!

1. Electricity - This is my number invention of all time because it basically created a platform for all other modern inventions. Our entire life is basically powered by electricity and it is almost impossible to function optimally without it. I come from a country where electricity remains unstable and our world is literally switched off when we are out of power.

That's my list in a nutshell. I am not a scientist, so I could not get into the technicalities of these inventions but I can at least be grateful for the world as it is today. I think I'd rather be here now than 300 years ago. So let us live and love every day as we are living in the most sophisticated era in the history of the world.

Ten things to help you get your finances in shape

Five Steps To Better Saving – Tekedia

I am writing my second post in 2020 sooner than I expected. The lockdown across the world has meant that some of us have had a bit more time on our hands. From the zero transit time from the bedroom to my workstation and much-reduced grooming, I think I have gained as much as 3-4 hours daily. I hope that we can all find the discipline to accomplish many of the things we claimed we could not do due to a lack of time.

My top ten list today is about money. I have seen a lot of comments on how only privileged people can survive the lockdown and people around the globe defaulting on their monthly bills within the first 30 days, and I thought I could share some tips to help get people on top of their finances. This will come in my usual top 10 list format for ease of use.

1. Assess your current situation: I think this is the first step on the journey to financial freedom. Who are you? What is your current income? Do you struggle to meet your monthly expenses? How long can you last without any income? This is like a health check on your finances. Give your finances a random score out of 10, and trust me, you will probably be right. Knowing where you are, is always a good place to start your financial fitness journey. A good exercise to start with is to calculate your net worth. You can calculate your net worth in these three (3) simple steps:

Step 1 - Sum up all your total assets (cash in the bank, stocks, bonds, car, home, land, etc.).
Step 2 - Sum up all your total liabilities (credit card debt, car loans, personal loans, outstanding mortgage, etc.)
Step 3 - Subtract your total liabilities from your total assets.

Your Net Worth = Total Assets - Total Liabilities.

Don't feel bad if the sum is negative, just continue reading. If it is positive, see how it can get even better.

2. Draw up a budget: The lack of a budget is one of the main reasons for poor finances. I know people that earn decent salaries but still struggling to meet their monthly expenses. A budget helps you make necessary adjustments before you earn any money. This way, you can think through your decisions thoroughly, make virtual purchases, and return them before a dime leaves your account. There are many budget tools you can find online but a budget could be as simple as writing down your income and expenses on a piece of paper and making all necessary adjustments. I usually like to leave some room for contingencies to ensure that I can treat myself to some fine dining or a little bit of charity when required.

3. Cut your expenses: Now that you have a budget. Can you see where your money is going? Cut it now! Is your rent too high? What about your child's school fees? Are you thinking of a second, third, or fourth child? You have to be deliberate with financial decisions. Are you spending too much on lunch at work or trying to impress too many girls? Living within your means is the only way you can build any substantial savings. You cannot live the champagne life on a coke budget.

4. Prioritize expensive debt: If you have no debt, good for you. (It is common to have no debt many African countries). But if you do, now will be a time to fast track payments. It does not make any sense to be paying expensive debt while building your savings. That is because the interest on loans is usually much higher than what you can earn on any safe investments. For instance, credit cards cost somewhere between 25% - 36% in interest per annum. You need to come up with an accelerated plan to get out of unproductive debt as soon as possible.

5. Start small: One of the main excuses that people who have no savings give, is that they earn too little. That is an excuse that you have to do away with. Life indeed happens. You may not have that dream job yet or your business may be going through a rough patch, but building a savings habit is a mindset thing. I know people that earn very little money and still manage to save. Spending more than you earn means you have to make some lifestyle changes, and you have to start now. A question that I usually ask people is: How much can you save without making any significant adjustments? Do you have an answer to that? Yes, Start saving that monthly.

6. Set up a debit order: Now that you know how much that you can save without dying, it is time to open a savings account and set up a direct debit instruction. Make sure you have no access to this account if you don't trust yourself. A savings account can earn up to 4% per annum. Do not be perturbed about the returns as consistency is the most important element at this stage. Do this for 3 months and make a balance inquiry at the bank. Now smile 😊.

7. Grow your income: This is one trick many people miss. Wouldn't you rather have $1million instead of a $100k? Now think hard, and ask yourself, how can you raise your income. Can you ask for a pay raise, what about a side hustle? Do you have any bulk cash sitting somewhere and earning zero? Growing your income gives you more options and must be considered at every point.

8. Get Insurance:  Too many people in this part of the world think insurance is an additional expense that can be overlooked, only to find themselves in a serious financial mess due to an unforeseen event. So get the right things insured. Health insurance, car insurance, fire, and burglary insurance for your business. This will ensure that an out of budget expense like a car accident or child falling sick does not derail your savings plan.

9. Get married or get a roommate: I know a lot of people will not agree with this, but getting married can significantly reduce your expenses if you and your spouse are both chipping in. You can share significant expenses like rent, school fees, or even a car if you work beside each other. You can also consider getting a roommate if you are young and single.

10. Invest: Now you that you have been able to build up some change in your savings account. It is time to start investing. Make sure your money never sleeps. Make inquiries about money markets, learn about buying stocks, read some personal finance books, and talk to a professional. Being able to invest is one of the perks of savings and investing will help you build lasting wealth as your money begins to work for you.

I hope you have been able to get a tip or two from this list and you can find the discipline to start your financial fitness journey too. I will be sharing some tips on good investments in future articles. See you soon.

The Top 10 Black Movies of all time

Hi everyone, I am coming out of retirement to write this article (I have been too lazy to write for years) but I found my groove due to the stay at home orders across the world. what a year 2020 has been! We are facing the world's biggest pandemic in over a century and the biggest disruption since world war 2 and I intend to use the opportunity to work smart, read, write and learn as much as I can.

On the fun side, I have used this opportunity to spend a lot of time with family rewatching classic movies. I have watched Prince Akeem fall in love with Lisa and Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson crash weddings. Hancock becoming a superhero and 2pac coming back to life in juice. As an African, I have particularly enjoyed re-watching some great black movies and I thought I'd use all of my 30+ years experience to do the top 10 black movies of all time.

For clarity, a black movie is a movie that has a black lead actor and 3 or more black supporting actors, so many Denzel Washington and Will Smith movies are automatically disqualified 😊.

Here's the list:

10. Best Man Holiday: This beautiful sequel was the continuation of the iconic The Best Man movie from 1999. The whole crew hooked up 15 years after and it was beautiful to watch. The star-studded line-up of black royalty includes Morris Chestnut, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, and Regina Hall. This was well put together and is number 10 in my top 10 black movies of all time.

The Best Man Holiday | Own & Watch The Best Man Holiday ...

9. Mo' Better Blues: This movie was about a young Denzel Washington caught in a love triangle and constantly having to make decisions. The typical life of a young man having to grow up. This very good movie is number 9 on my list.

Terence Blanchard, Branford Marsalis Quartet - Music From Mo ...

8. Straight outta Compton: This is the true-life story of the legendary rap group NWA. This movie really connects with you, if you grew up listening to rap music. Its always a good feeling getting to know happens behind the scenes.

Straight Outta Compton (film) - Wikipedia

7. Why do fools fall in love: This was another true-life story. A young black singer named Frankie Lymon lived a life of reckless decisions and failed to maximize his potential due to the usual detractors. The movie features the beautiful Halle Berry, Vivica Fox, and Lela Rochon.

Amazon.com: Watch Why Do Fools Fall In Love | Prime Video

6. Think Like a Man: This was another star-studded movie for the culture. Based on Steve Harvey's best selling book. Women finally learn to understand how men think and respond accordingly.
The movie features the beautiful quartet of Regina Hall, Taraji P Henson, Gabrielle Union, and Megan Good.

5. The Best Man: This is one of my favourite movies of all time. The guy-talks were epic and the candy dance at the end rocked weddings for ages. This one is for the culture. What would you do if your best friend slept with your wife to be? Watch The Best Man 👍.

Buy The Best Man - Microsoft Store

4. Juice: The story of 4 friends and the hood-life. Juice was an important movie for all 80's babies.
A young Omar Epps and 2pac Shakur delivered a masterclass that is still so good to watch in 2020.

Juice (film) - Wikipedia

3. Set it Off: I can't believe I almost missed out this one. This was also one of my favourite movies back then and still cannot get over how beautiful Jada Pinkett was...sorry Fish Mooney! Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett, and Vivica Fox helped deliver one of the most iconic black movies of all time. Making my Top 3!

www.gstatic.com/tv/thumb/v22vodart/18676/p18676...

2. Black Panther: Imagine our own very Marvel movie! This was not Hancock kinda superhero, this was a marvel type of superhero. The entire black race went nuts when we finally got our own superhero movie and we all literally became citizens of Wakanda. It was a typical African Story but with great effects and perfect execution. Grossed over a billion dollars at the box office. We made sure of that! Black Panther 2 is coming in 2022.

Black Panther (film) - Wikipedia

1. Coming to America: Before Wakanda, there was Zamunda! Eddie Murphy delivering one of the most beautifully executed scripts of all time. An African prince breaking the family tradition to search for his own bride. This is the rom-com of all rom-coms. We still have the epic 'Good Morning my Neighbours' line rocking Tik-Tok over 3 decades later. This movie has my vote as the greatest black movie of all time.

Coming to America [DVD] [1988] - Best Buy

I hope you enjoyed my list. You should find time to watch some of these movies while we are under quarantine (Try Netflix or Google Movies) and  I hope you enjoy every bit of it. Ciao.

A yam economy

Economics is a branch of knowledge concerned with production, consumption and transfer of wealth. This can also pass as a definition of common sense. So, why is it so difficult to understand economics, build a fair world and pass economically sound policies? My answer, we still do not understand economics.

To breakdown the complexities of economics, I am going to assume we have a mono-economy (only one product), and that product is also the currency - yams. We have a country of 180 million people that all produce yams. Every other need we have has to be paid with yams. The richest man is Alhaji Dangoyam. He has so many yam production farms that he can afford to pay for anything in yams (We can say he is worth Trillions of Yams). There are also large corporations that have been set up to produce yams in large quantities, they employ millions of people to work for them and pay them a percentage of the yams produced. But, they are only able to employ a fraction of the population. Another fraction own small farms producing yams just enough to meet their own daily needs plus a bit. In all of these, there is 100 million people left who barely produce any yams and are barely surviving. You'd say, why cant they just get a farm and produce their own yams to meet their own daily needs? Well, it is not that easy. First, you need to learn how to produce yams (education) and then you need yams(capital) to get a farm to produce yams. No one is going to teach you how to produce yams if you do not give them some yams first. Wow.

Then we have the Government. The Government produces ZERO yams but they take a share of everybody's yam production and distributes as they please (policies).

The big challenge remains how to solve the following problems.

1. If the government takes too much from those that produce yams (taxes), they risk losing them to other countries where they can produce more yams, keep more of their yams, and get more value for the share the government takes.

2. The 100 million starving people want the government to employ them or give them free yams. They are mad at the system, but the total yams that accrues to the government is just not enough to go round. They do not believe it.

3. A lot of the yams that accrues to the government are stolen by employees of the government for their own personal consumption. How do we stop this?

4. It has been proven that countries that produce more yams, generally have more yams to go round. How do we get the country to produce more yams?

As 2019 approaches, think of who can strategically solve the problems above. How do we get more productive to ensure we have enough yams to go round? How do we get more value for the yams we give to the government? How do we stop government employees from stealing our collective yams? How do we get more people to pay their fair share of yams due to the government? What do we do about the 100 million disadvantaged citizens? How do we teach them how to produce yams (education) and give them access to farms to produce yams (capital) ? Think of all these difficult questions and ask again. Why is it so difficult to understand economics?

MY TOP 10 FASHION MODELS by Ibhade Arabome

The fashion industry… an industry that is booming and influential; it has been infamous for its promotion of anorexia (and other pretty disgusting eating disorders), stick-thin models and with some brands using mostly Caucasian models on their runways resulting in shouts of racism all over the place. Despite these controversial issues, the industry has had its upsides as they have produced many world-class, unique ladies that have set fashion trends and been the faces of many popular designers. Women want to be them and men want to be with them, making fashion models very hot property.

Now, everybody has favourites and I am no exception. What are a few of my favourite things you ask? Well, a lot of things (thanks for asking) but right now, we’ll focus on who are my favourites and why. Enter, my top 10 favourite fashion models.

1. Chanel Iman
This 5’10” Korean/African-American lady was one of the “models to watch” when she burst into the scene and really made her mark in the fashion world in 2009. She has walked for the ever famous Victoria Secret, Banana Republic and DSQUARED2 (to name a few). Her impeccably long legs and elegant strut on the catwalk are just a few of her many attributes, making her a designer’s dream and one of my leading ladies.

2. Irina Lazareanu
She made me really fall in love with the fashion industry and is still one of my style icons. Her quirky, vintage, rocker style makes her a diverse and unique individual which is a major trait that designers adore. It has also been instrumental in her modelling career which has seen her work for Chanel, Balenciaga, Versace and the likes. This Romanian/Canadian will always be one of my favourite models of all time. No joke. Of ALL time.

3. Cara Delevingne

The blonde, thick-eyebrowed Englishwoman is the model of the moment and is regularly seen on the runway, in music videos and magazine spreads (her presence knows no bounds). Her tomboy/kooky style and care-free attitude is loved by some yet hated by many. I happen to be in the ‘love’ category which is why she’s on my list.

4. Kate Moss
The queen of grunge who popularised the boho chic and waif trends is on my list for her panache and style. With her style being similar to Irina, this makes it easy to understand why I love her too. She’s famous for being smaller than the statuesque of her time, i.e. the tall and leggy models like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and others.
Her ability to rock a military jacket and boiler suits made me a big fan of the clothing items causing me to want to buy them and buy as many as possible. Again, no joke. She’s incredible and no doubt one of my favourite models. Ever.

5. Joan Smalls
I love her elegance, beauty, slenderness, milk chocolate complexion and grace. Her cool, calm and collected nature makes her the epitome of a model. She’s one of the few popular black models around, making her a somewhat rare gem. The Puerto Rican stunner is 27 but can easily pass for a lady 7 years her junior. She’s definitely a favourite of mine.

6. Jourdan Dunn
Where do I start with Miss D? I remember when she was sprung into the spotlight in 2007 and I was gobsmacked by her elegance (yeah, I think many models are elegant, hence why I’ve used the word again). Her cute, doll-like features, elongated legs and ever-present confidence, make her a model to be reckoned with.
Her career has sky-rocketed since she started out, making her a staple in popular brands’ advertising. By the way, check out her cooking channel on YouTube; she makes delicious dishes and spices up each episode with friends and a lot of comedy. So yeah, she’s definitely top 10 material.

7. Freja Beha Erichsen
A biker chick that rocks the tomboy look too well. She revived my love for jeans and all things guyish (yet feminine). I love how she makes manly styles look so effortlessly flawless. She (in my opinion) started making the short, Kristen Stewart-brunette hairdo fashionable before it became a big hit in recent times.
The Danish model has nailed the I’m-not-bothered look and thus, makes her a top 10 candidate.

8. Liu Wen
One of China’s finest exports to the world is Miss Wen; her happy-go-lucky personality coupled with her impeccable street style makes her another one of my top models. Whether she’s clad in makeup or completely au naturel, her beauty is transcendent. She’s an incredibly photogenic lady and is sensational in luxurious, high fashion shots as well as simple photographs. She is the bomb.

9. Karlie Kloss
The tallest lady of the gang, standing at 6’1” (to be specific), is also on my list. The American wonder woman has seen non-stop action in her career. She’s known for her poise and “powerful strut”. Yeah, you read that right; “powerful”. Tyra Banks once stated that Karlie is one of her favourite models because of her “unique, atypical beauty” and I completely and totally agree with this statement.

10. Kendall Jenner
Finally! We have reached the last lady of the list; we all know her and her famous/infamous family; she’s credited for doing her own thing and being an independent brand hence why she’s one of the most-talked about models of the moment.
Her personal style is to die for (I literally want everything she owns) and her sashay down the catwalk makes her one cool cat, seeing as she’s a novice compared to the previously mentioned ladies on my list. All the same, she’s one of my favourite models.

Well, there you have it; my top 10 models in the fashion world and my (interesting) reasons why I adore them so.

Ciao!

Happy New year - Top 10 Things to do in 2015

Hi Guys, happy new year to you all. well, I guess new year came a bit late this year....lol. In one of my previous posts, I promised to drop an article once a week but I have been unbelievable lazzzy.so I am giving myself a big fail on this one. Its the 3rd week of 2015 and I thought I could inspire you guys for the year. It's still early days so you can grab a pen and a cup of coffee and set out an agenda for the year. Here's my top 10 list of things that you can do this year.

1. Learn something new - There's a saying that we start getting old the day we stop learning. You may be in your 20s, 30s or even 40s but you will be completely shocked at the amount of basic things you cannot do. Now is the time to crack up a list. what do you wish you could do? Do you know how to swim? How about learning to play a musical instrument like the guitar, piano or trumpet, or even learn how to write, speak to the public or learn a new language. Whatever drives you, It's always fun to know more and the new year provides that opportunity.

2. Get an extra degree - Are you a professor or doctor? Certificates never get old. The thing is that a certificate is an evidence of knowledge as opposed to obtaining knowledge for fun or self development a certificate creates opportunities, just ask Buhari...lol. Did you obtain your bachelors 10 years ago and do not have a masters degree? Or you wanted to study law and ended up with sociology? You still have a chance to get that extra certification now.

3. Fall in love - If you are single and ready to mingle or even if you have been heartbroken a few times. 2015 can be the time to let go of all that baggage and just let loose. It's always great to be open minded and fall in love. The 1st phase in a relationship is always so beautiful and could create long term memories you would love to reminisce about in future. Love may be overrated but it's definitely better than being lonely.

4. Get married - Have you been saving for your dream wedding or waiting for perfection? Why not take a big risk and just get married. Your life really never starts until you do. Marriage creates a more realistic picture of what your future will be like and is a cure for irresponsibility and promiscuity. When all the expenses hit you ehn, your eye go shine...just kidding.

5. Change your fashion theme - If you've got some cash to play with then changing your wardrobe isn't something bad to look forward to this year. Aren't you tired of the same old boot cut jeans with
T-shirts? You can spice things up a bit by changing that theme by changing brands, colour codes or just change your whole style in all. I really enjoyed migrating from T.M Lewin to Charles Tyrwhitt last year. You can google to guide you through this makeover process if you are short of ideas.

6. Travel somewhere new - The world has 196 countries. That means you can visit 2 countries per year all through your lifetime and there will still be places to visit. Do you want to see the blue mosque in Istanbul or the Berlin wall in Germany, the pyramids or Giza or the great wall of China. You can pick a destination and visit somewhere unusual this year. Take pictures, wine, dine and have great sex. Just have fun!

7. Go vocational - You know how we always talked about having a side hustle to augment our active income? Going vocational can help with that. What do you wanna learn? Photography, web design, tailoring, carpentry, interior design, name it. acquiring vocational skills can be fun and bring in some extra cheese along the line.

8. Lose weight - When last did you check your BMI. My guess is that you are probably overweight. 2015 might be a fine time for you to change your diet and workout daily. 15 - 30 minutes a day is just alright and you could end this year a lot fitter than you started it.

9. Start a small business - A friend of mine just started high-end online store check Oreeda.com.  even though she already earns big bucks from a full time job. That's the very spirit you need. You can start something too. It may be in partnership with someone with a bit more time or just solo. Do you have any skills you aren't using or you just love to sell or consult. Take an extra step and formalise something. You never can tell.

10. Join a social club - Networking cannot be over emphasised. Someone once told me that you can calculate your net worth by working out what you can get in ransom if you kidnapped every contact on your phone. If your contact is filled with Risi oni rice, Mufu eleran, etcetera. Then you definitely need to meet more people. You can join a gym, a recreational club or even a church group to add that extra spice to your network this year.

People always say new years are overrated and you can turn things around anytime but the years are numbered to guide us,provide timelines and bookmark landmarks. Imagine we all lived our lives without a clock and chose to wake up once the sun is up or we kept no dates and don't even know our birthdays or our ages. New year acknowledgements are definitely here to stay and we should all make the best out of every new year . I wish you a wonderful 2015.
